How to Earn the CFA Charter?

- Pass the Level II exam (2 times per year)
- Pass the Level III exam (2 times per year)
- Have four years of professional work experience in the investment decision-making process

Enrollment Requirements
To become a CFA candidate, you must enroll in the CFA Program® before you can register for the Level I Exam.
CFA Program Entrance Requirements
- Meet one of the following entrance requirements:
Bachelor’s Degree
I have completed a bachelor’s degree or equivalent program. Most CFA Program applicants have the education to enroll in graduate studies in the country where they earned their degree. If you’re not sure if your program is comparable, ask your college or university.
Final-Year Student
I am a student in the final year of my bachelor’s degree or equivalent program. I understand that I may register for the Level I Exam, but I must complete my degree program prior to registering for Level II.
Professional Experience
I have a combination of four years of full-time work experience and/or higher education. I understand that part-time work does NOT qualify me for this track, but that my full-time work does not need to be investment related.
- Have an international travel passport
CFA Institute requires that every CFA Program candidate have a valid international travel passport to register and sit for the exam.
- Be prepared to take the exams in English
The CFA Program exams are only offered in English.
- Meet the professional conduct admission criteria
All candidates in the CFA Program must complete a Professional Conduct Statement form to attest that they are in compliance with this requirement.

SCHOLARSHIPS
By granting scholarships, we support our mission and values by making the CFA Program—and the financial expertise that comes with earning the charter—more accessible to more candidates. To facilitate the application process for the CFA Institute scholarships, we are implementing the following changes effective from 2024.
Changes to Scholarship Categories
Previously, five scholarship types were available: Access, Women’s, Student, Professor, and Regulator. From 2024, we will consolidate our offerings into three main categories: Access, Professor, and Student.
Although the Women’s Scholarship program will be discontinued starting in 2024, we remain committed to advancing gender equality in the investment profession. Gender will still be considered when granting scholarships. Prior recipients of the Women’s Scholarship are encouraged to apply for an Access Scholarship if they need financial assistance with the program.
How to Gain the CFA Scholarship
Recipients must register and sit for the exam. They will not be permitted to purchase a deferral once registered but may be eligible for an emergency deferral if they have a qualifying reason.
Key Policies for Scholarship Recipients
- Recipients can attempt the exam twice per level. For example, if a candidate receives a scholarship at Level I, sits for the exam, and fails, they may apply for a scholarship one more time at Level I. If awarded, they must pass on the second attempt.
- Compliance with scholarship policies is mandatory. Failure to comply will result in forfeiting future scholarship opportunities.
Scholarship Award Amounts
Beginning September 1, 2024, the registration fee for Access Scholarship awardees will increase from 300 to 400 US dollars. Professor and Student Scholarship awardees will pay 600 US dollars.
Scholarship Application Periods
Candidates can apply for CFA Institute Scholarships four times a year, which is twice as often as in previous years. Applications are considered during the registration for the exam and must account for the level of examination.
The application period will be open for two and a half weeks. Award decisions will be communicated before the early registration deadline for the selected window.
General Scholarship FAQs
Can I apply for a scholarship while waiting for my exam result?
No, you are not eligible to apply for a scholarship until you receive your exam result. Applications submitted prior to receiving your result will be rejected.
Can I apply for more than one scholarship at a time?
Yes, you may apply for multiple scholarships. If awarded multiple scholarships, the most recently awarded scholarship will be applied.
Is there a limit to the number of scholarship applications?
No, we do not track or limit the number of applications an individual submits.
When will the discounted fee be displayed during registration?
The scholarship rate will display on the final page before payment, not immediately. Note that changing your payment method may deactivate your discount. Contact us if this occurs.
What happens if I do not use my scholarship before it expires?
If you do not utilize your scholarship by not registering, scheduling, or appearing for the exam, you will not be eligible for future scholarships.
Can I extend my scholarship?
If you are not awarded a scholarship, you may register at the early registration price for the current exam cycle. Wait for the official decision notification from our Scholarships team for instructions on registering at the lower fee. If you register before receiving this notification, you will not receive a refund for paying the higher fee. This option is valid only if the registration window is still open.
